The legacy Web was never designed to support “live” communication between backend servers and Web clients, so real-time behavior can only be simulated using complex, costly and bandwidth-guzzling workarounds such as Comet, Reverse Ajax, long polling, or Data Push.
Another critical failing of the legacy Web is that it does not “speak” enterprise back-end protocols such as JMS, XMPP, AMQP, or any of the myriad custom formats at the heart of modern business processes. Every data stream flowing between a back-end server and a Web client must continuously be translated from its native protocol into HTTP and back again by cumbersome application server middleware. This increases cost, complexity and latency while degrading performance and scalability.
